Let me tell you about Alec, my nine-year-old son. Like many children, he has asthma, allergies (fortunately only to dust mites) and eczema. His skin is extremely sensitive and itchy. To treat these chronic conditions he has five prescriptions -– Advair discus for his asthma, over-the-counter Loratadine tablets (antihistamine), Restasis eye drops, Nasonex for night time breathing, and Triamcinilone cream for the eczema, plus Protopic cream. Thankfully, these prescriptions help us manage his asthma and keep his symptoms under control so he's just as active as our seven- and 13-year-old sons.
These drugs are very expensive. Advair, for example, retails for around $185 per month at my local pharmacy. A few years ago I learned first hand that if you don’t have insurance, you pay the full cash price -- $185 for Advair today -- but if you have insurance, the pharmacy discounts Advair to between $157 and $163, depending on your insurance company. I knew that large insurance companies negotiate big discounts because they are buying in bulk on behalf of their members, but this didn’t seem fair to me. I knew they were charging insured customers $22 to $28 less than the uninsured customers. And I asked myself, why should people least able to afford their prescriptions, the uninsured, pay more than people with insurance?
I started PS Card with my wife, Susan, in 2006 to fix this problem. My family has insurance now, but if we didn't, I would be buying Alec’s Advair for $157 instead of $185 by simply showing my PS Card to the pharmacist when I pay for his prescription.
Can a discount prescription card like PS Card help you? Can it help your son or daughter or mom or dad? If you (or they) are paying full retail prices for your prescriptions, I know that PS Card can save you money and help you afford the drugs that you and your family need. I hope we can help you and your family stay healthy. That’s why I started PS Card.
